On the facing leaf (image 292) a places column, in which the row read across to entry 25 gives '1 KLIPRUG'. FRANS'S READING: Carel and Izaak van der Merwe carry NO FARM on this opening; the Visagie household is at Kliprug. *** THE ROLL WRITES PATRONYMICS AS A MATTER OF COURSE, AND THAT IS WHY THIS PAGE MATTERS BEYOND ITS OWN SIX HOUSEHOLDS. *** Carelszn, Izaaks zoon, Pzoon - three in six entries. In a family that reuses given names as hard as this one, a roll that patronymises every head of household is the instrument that separates men the registers confuse. WHO THESE ARE: entry 23 is PER-001786 Carel Petrus van der Merwe (1798-1847), a son of Carel Aaron, and CARELSZN confirms it. Entry 25's wife is PER-001785 Johanna Sophia van der Merwe (1796-1872), another of Carel Aaron's children, and her husband is PER-001856. Entry 24, IZAAKS ZOON, is NOT one of Carel Aaron's sons - the model's Izaak of that generation is Izaak JOHANNES (PER-001658) and a son of Carel - so this is a different household and no identification is made.
