Read off the sheet: 'THE FARM WILGER FONTEIN No. 59, PRINCE ALBERT ... The above Figure coloured yellow represents a Piece of CROWN LAND called WILGER FONTEIN containing [?8]827 Morgen 450 Square Roods of Land, situate in the Division of PRINCE ALBERT, Field-cornetcy of GOUPH No. 4, and bounded North East by BLAAUW DRAAY, East by KRUID FONTEIN, South by RIET FONTEIN, West by JACOBS KRAAL, and South West by SCRUIF PAAL. Surveyed by me, [?M. de Villiers], Gov't Surveyor, 1872.' Examiner's note 'The Numerical Data of this Diagram are sufficiently consistent, No. 581, 1873'. Beacons pointed out to [?C. A. Grunewald]. | THE GRANT, in the certificate block: 'I certify that this diagram belongs to the QUITRENT TITLE this day issued in favour of NICOLAAS FRANCOIS MARAIS and CHARL JOHANNES ANTONE MARAIS. Surv. Genl's Office, 17 MAY 1875.' Crown land taken into private title, two men jointly. | THE LEADING DIGIT OF THE EXTENT IS READ ON ARITHMETIC, NOT ON THE INK. The figure could be 2827 or 8827. The cadastre gives this farm 7,578.8 ha, which is about 8,848 morgen, and the verso's own deductions total 4,826 morgen - more than 2,827 by itself. So 8827 is the only reading the sheet is consistent with. Recorded as [?8]827 rather than silently corrected, per 5a note 5. | NAMES ON THE FACE, and two of them matter: the farm carries DEELFONTEIN and MARAISDAL written inside its own boundary, and those are the two portions the verso later deducts. A name people were already using in 1872 became a name on title in 1906 and 1911 - 5's second rule, caught in the act. MARAISDAL is named for the grantees. Neighbours labelled around the sheet: VOGEL FONTEIN & SEVEN FONTEIN, WELGEVREDEN, JACOBS KRAAL, SCRUIF PAAL, RIET FONTEIN, BLAAUW DRAAY, KRUID FONTEIN. Two of them are already parcels here - Kruidfontein No. 82 (PAR-000315) and Scruif Paal No. 2 (PAR-000258). | CONFIRMED 27 Aug 2026 BY THE POLYGONS: the cadastre measures this farm at 7,572.8 ha and its two portions at 3,260.5 and 886.1, against 7,561, 3,266 and 868 computed from the sheet's own morgen. The reading [?8]827 is right and 2827 is impossible. See PAR-000259.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
