The citation as it was given

Transcribed as read: 'Den 15 deto / Jacobus Daniel / gebooren den 26 Januarij Ao 1786 / v Jan Louies Venter / m Johanna Jacomiena Smit / g Daniel Jacob du Plesie, Anna Petronella du Plesie, Jacobus Smit en Martha Erasmus'. The baptism month is February and the year [1788] is inferred: the opening's other births run to 10 October 1787, so its February baptisms cannot be earlier than 1788. A TWO-YEAR-OLD AT THE FONT, and the opening holds a second late one (born 4 Aug 1786, baptised the same week) - the lag itself is evidence of distance, per 5's baptism rule. THE MARGIN YEAR IS READ AS 1786, agreeing with FamilySearch GW6V-NF6; the alternative stated honestly: were it 1788, this would be an ordinary three-week baptism, but that is not what the digit looks like and not what FS reads. THE PUZZLE WORTH KEEPING: the family stood at this font on 19 March 1786 with Petrus (SRC-575) seven weeks after this child's birth, and did not baptise the newborn - he waited two years; a newborn left home while a one-year-old travelled is the likely shape. Godparents are the MOTHER'S family - Jacobus Smit among them, and the child carries his name. These boys are brothers of Adriana Cecilia Venter (LHZQ-KMZ, PER-000002), so the du Plessis and van der Watt names here are her network too. | [24 Aug 2026, later] FS's source list shows this was a DOUBLE baptism: 'Baptism Jacobus Daniel & Maria Magdalena Venter 15Feb1788 Paarl'. The sister Maria Magdalena (PER-000614, L4Q7-8ZJ, b 19 Nov 1787) was baptised the same day; her entry is not on the supplied opening and presumably follows it.
