Roods of Land SITUATED IN THE DISTRICT OF SWELLEMDAM" - Swellendam, spelled with an M on the sheet. Surveyed by J.H. Voorman, Sworn Surveyor. "Copied from diagram relating to Title Deed No. SW.Q.7-23 dated 1.9.1831", copied for the Surveyor-General 28.6.1967. CANCELLED 1.4.47 vide diagram 7850/46 (C.A.T. 5213-47), farm 417/31, file S.5595, signed W.G. Golightly for the Surveyor-General. Sheets AK-1D, AC-2. | THE NEIGHBOURS, ALL OF THEM STILL LOAN PLACES IN 1831: NE contiguous to BRAKKE KUIL; E towards HECTORSKRAL about 480 roods; SW towards MELKHOUTEFONTYN about 480 roods; SSW towards KRANZFONTYN about 1300 roods; W towards MELKHOUTE KRAL 191 roods; NNW towards PLATTEKOP about 2850 roods. | THE MAP FACE. A HOUSE and a WEAK SPRING marked at the centre, with 1 3/4 morgen of "Cultiv: com: Arable" beside them. Interior: heath ground mixed with limestone 387 morgen; broken grazing and bushy ground mixed with limestone plains 1306 morgen 377 sq roods; limestone hills 926 morgen; common grazing of 17, 8 1/4 and 40 3/4 morgen. Beyond the boundary the surveyor writes vacant land on three sides - about 11,000 morgen no water to the east, about 30,000 morgen no water to the south-east, about 3000 morgen of hills to the south. | *** AND ON THE NORTH-WEST BOUNDARY: "com Grazing Ground mixed with Lime stone about 8000 Morgens with a weak spring and the ZOETEMELKS RIVIER". *** | WHAT IT SETTLES, AND IT IS NOT WHAT IT WAS FETCHED FOR. IT NAMES A DIFFERENT RIVER. The Zoetemelks runs to the Goukou and the sea; the 1809 inventory says "gelegen aan d'Olifants rivier". This is not that farm. | WHAT IT DOES ESTABLISH IS THE GEOGRAPHY THE WHOLE ARGUMENT NOW RESTS ON. A farm today in the RIVERSDALE registration division is titled, in 1831, as being IN THE DISTRICT OF SWELLENDAM - and its deed carries the prefix SW.Q, the Swellendam quitrent series, the same way the Koup deeds carry Bf.W.Q for Beaufort West. District boundaries moved and the modern division name is not the historical district. That is exactly the point SRC-465 turns on, now shown on a sheet rather than argued from a web page. | AND IT DATES THE CONVERSION. Every neighbour is still "the Land forming the Loan Place" in 1831, so this ground was loan-farm ground until then. LOAN-FARM RENT ROLLS WOULD NAME ITS HOLDERS YEAR BY YEAR BACK INTO THE 1700s, which is the register that would say whether an Oosthuizen ever held it. | SCOPE: Riversdale is not the Koup. 9a - this is the head of a trail and gets a bounded set of records. The document and this row; no parcel, no ownership, and the six neighbouring loan places are recorded here as a list to search, not as entities to create.
