The citation as it was given

TRANSCRIPTION OF THE ANNOTATIONS. Title block: "THE FARM Matjesfontein No. 601, CALVINIA", D1-3.D.D. Areas: "Grazing Ground 8778 Morgen 189 Square Roods" and "Government Ground 5784 Morgen 193 Square Roods". Scale of 1000 Rhynlands Roods. THE NEIGHBOURS, clockwise, and this is what the sheet was fetched for: north-west "an extent of waste government ground"; north-east "Govt Ground requested for by the Wid. Johs Louw J.G. Son"; east "Govt Ground requested for by E. A. Nel A son"; south-east "Govt Ground reqd for by Sybrand Straus J.M. Son"; south "Ground requested for by Johannes Matts Straus K. Senior"; west "Govt Ground reqd for by David Josephus Straus J.M. Son". NO VAN DER MERWE APPEARS ANYWHERE ON THE SHEET. Three Strausses hold the ground round the south and west, two of them brothers - David Josephus and Sybrand, both entered as J. M. Son - and Johannes Matthys Straus K. Senior is on the south. Compare SRC-384: SYBRAND ALBERTUS STRAUSS 1812-1890 married Maria Magdalena Visagie at Clanwilliam in 1846, and he is the man FamilySearch wrongly attaches to Schalk Willem Burger van der Merwe's household (FIX-0004). Whether the Sybrand on this diagram is that man or his father is NOT established here; he would have been 11 at the 1823 survey and 25 at the 1837 title. AND THE SHEET PROVES THE PROBLEM LEAD-0151 IS ABOUT. A road out of the south-west corner is labelled "Road to the place Matjes fon tein of J. M. Straus". So a DIFFERENT farm of the same name lay within a few kilometres and belonged to the neighbouring family. Two fountain notes name a third: "Klip fontein weak permt for the places Naresie, Matjes fontein" and "Elands Kloof fontein strong permt for the places Riet fountain, Uilkomst alias Naresie Matjesfontein". THE REST OF THE FACE: "Ordr[e] dwell house" and "weak permt fountain" at the centre, the werf; "Road from the bokkeveld" and a note "to the different places in the Hantam"; ground described as "karroo hills common grazing", "Good Summer Grazing rood grond", "mountainous good winter grazing", "Soetlands", "Weymans", "Verlate Kloof", "deep rocky kloof 68t Morgen", and "6 [morgen] cultiv." beside the house. Portion 5 is drawn in the south. PART TWO, which carries the written description, is file 10054268.TIF and is NOT held. Page 3 is 10054384.TIF.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
