Clara Herbst

[SRC-259] NAMED IN THE TULBAGH BOOK, and the sentence carries three facts at once. Boeseken and Cairns write that Jan Harmensz Potgieter, having settled beside the Klein Berg River, "made an honest woman of CLARA HERBST, GRANDDAUGHTER OF A FREED SLAVE, LOUIS OF BENGAL, and legitimised their three daughters." So: she was living with Potgieter before they married; their three daughters were born before the marriage and legitimised by it; and her grandfather was an enslaved man who had been freed. She died in 1714, and the inventory of her estate shows the property carried only stock - no vines, despite the census returns crediting Potgieter with 2 000 vines in 1709. The authors note they can offer no explanation for that discrepancy. She is the granddaughter through whom the descent from Louis van BengaleM reaches this family.

[15 Aug 2026] HER TREE ID WAS WRONG and is corrected. It resolved to JACOB VAN DE KAAP, a different person; the right row is baptised before 28 June 1686 and dead before 18 February 1714, which sharpens the bare 1714 this row carried and agrees with the estate inventory the Tulbagh book describes. She married Johannes Harmensz Potgieter on 24 July 1703, which is the marriage the book calls the legitimising of their three daughters. Her mother is PER-001439.

[15 Aug 2026] THE PRIVATE TREE HOLDS LOUIS VAN BENGALE TWICE AND THE TWO ROWS DISAGREE ABOUT WHAT HE WAS TO LYSBETH SANDERS. One row, with no dates, stands as her FATHER; a second, born about 1652 and died 1716, stands as her HUSBAND, and their two daughters carry the patronymic LOUISZ. Lysbeth was baptised before 2 March 1659, so the dated row cannot be her father - he would be seven years older than his daughter, which the chronological test rejects outright.

THE WHOLE DESCENT TURNS ON THIS. If Lysbeth is his daughter, Clara HerbstH is his granddaughter and the Tulbagh book is describing blood. If she is his wife, Clara - her daughter by Johann Herbst - is his STEPgranddaughter and the line does not carry his ancestry at all.
