That is PER-000146, whose row carried '1796~' - the baptism year again, where the birth is 9 JUNE 1795. | *** THE CONGREGATION IS ROODEZAND, AND THAT IS THE POINT. *** The register's own title page (image 185) reads 'Soli deo gloria. Het boek der Gedoopte kinderen De Kerkgemeente van 't LAND VAN WAVEREN, sedert 't jaar 1743' - the Land van Waveren is Tulbagh, and Roodezand is the congregation there. LEAD-0257 named Roodezand in advance as the register that would point at the BOLAND OLIFANTS, because it served the Olifants valley until Clanwilliam was founded in 1826. It is now found holding a child of this household. | THE WITNESSES ARE THE MOTHER'S PEOPLE. Johannes Jacobus VAN TONDER is a kinsman of Susanna Catharina; Susanna Jacoba VAN WIJK shares a surname with her own mother, Susanna van Wyk (PER-000748), so is plausibly the maternal grandmother or her kin [TO VERIFY]. Susanna Elisabeth Oosthuijsen is the child's own sister (PER-000141), about eleven. A CRONJE stands here as Pieter Cronje, and a Susanna Catharina Cronje stands at the Swellendam baptism of 1803/04 (SRC-516) - the same family following this household across the colony. | *** WHAT IT DOES TO THE OLIFANTS QUESTION: IT SPLITS IT. *** The five baptisms now run TULBAGH/ROODEZAND March 1796, GRAAFF-REINET September 1799, SWARTLAND December 1802, SWELLENDAM about 1804, SWELLENDAM 1808. Roodezand and Swartland are both western congregations and both sit on the road to Piketberg, Clanwilliam and Citrusdal; Swellendam is the other side of the colony. So the record now supports EITHER a household that lived in the north-west through the 1790s and moved south-east about 1803, OR one that travelled enormous distances to church. | THE CITRUSDAL READING WAS WITHDRAWN ON 18 AUGUST AND MUST NOW BE TREATED AS OPEN AGAIN, not restored. What still cuts against it is the 1808 entry's 'woonende aan Oliphants Rivier' written by a SWELLENDAM clerk, and A.A. Faure taking the 1809 estate as Landdrost of Swellendam - and the inventory transcript already says of that second point, in its own words, that 'it is not proof'. LEAD-0260.
