Supplied by [FAMILY] Den 8 dito | Pieter Ernst | geboore Den 14 Septemb A:o 1786 | v[ader] Fiderik Arnoldus Kriger | m[oeder] Engela Fransciena Grisel | g[etuigen] Johan Jurit Grisel, Anna Maria Jacoba Oldwaar. *** IT RESOLVES A CONFLICT RATHER THAN CREATING ONE. *** Two dates have been circulating for this man, 14 September 1786 and 8 December 1787. They are not rival birth dates: 1786 is the birth and 1787 the christening, fifteen months apart, and this single entry carries both. 'Lives of the Earlier Krugers' (SRC-717) gives 'b. 8.12.1787', which is the christening date carried as a birth, and De Villiers & Pama is cited for it on FamilySearch. *** AND THE PAARL BAPTISM DOES NOT ARGUE AGAINST A KOUP BIRTH. *** 5, third place rule: a baptism names a CHURCH, not a home. His parents married at Paarl on 4 October 1785, so Paarl is the family's church; the death notice (SRC-719) puts the birth itself at Van der Byls Kraal. SPELLING AS THE REGISTER HAS IT, not normalised: the father is written FIDERIK ARNOLDUS KRIGER and the mother ENGELA FRANSCIENA GRISEL.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
