[16 Sep 2026] Read in full for George Thompson's Botha of Jakhal's-Fonteyn (LEAD-0350, SRC-635). Images saved for reading only, not published. The archive's typed inventory (film 008145409, typed page 49) lists J418 as 'Finale rol. Ongedateer', dated 1823 by comparison with the draft roll J419, and notes that Worcester became a sub-district of Tulbagh in October 1819 and the district seat moved from Tulbagh to Worcester in November 1822. *** THE FORM. *** A printed form: names of men over 16 and their wives, then Mans, Vrouwen, Zoons beneden de 16 jaren, Dochters, servants, slaves, stock and crops; the facing leaf carries Landeryen with In Eigendom / In Erfpacht / In Leening, then 'Namen der Plaatsen of Erven welke hy bezit' and 'Waar, of op welke afstand van de Drostdy, dezelven gelegen zyn' - a farm name and its distance from Worcester in hours. The pages number no lines: in opgaaf_rows 'line' is the household's position on the page. *** THE KLEYNE SWARTE BERG WARD (images 507-510), read against the page. *** Headed 'Kleyne Swarte Berg', veldcornet JAN ANDRIES OLIVIER x Maria Elisabeth Kock (1st household). 24 men, 19 women, 31 sons, 26 daughters on the first page. Households include Fredrik Birch x Anna Maria Kortje (2nd; facing leaf 'Taaybosch kraal, 40 uren'), Hendrik Johannes Nieuwenhuysen x Catharina Louisa Swanepoel (6th; facing leaf 'Hartebeest Fonteyn, 30 Uuren' [TO VERIFY row match]), Daniel Harmse de oude x Anna Magdalena Kortje, Johannes Lodewyk Kortje, Jacobus Cornelis Kortje x Judith Hester Susanna Hartman, the van Deventer, van Eeden and Grisel households, and Hester Swanepoel widow of Joseph Fourie. The same leaf has '1e de Drift 2e Zoute vlakte & 3e Barends kraal, 50 a 60 uren', '1e Riet valey & 2e Fabers kraal, 60 a 90 uren', 'Drie Fonteynen, 65 uren', 'Buffels Rivier, 40 uren' and 'Zand Rivier, 50 uren'. On image 509, after 'Per Transport 24 19 31 ...', the 4th household is JOHANNES MARTHINUS KORTSE, counted as a man with no wife and 2 sons, and the 4th row of the facing leaf (image 510) reads 'de Dwcka, 60 Uuren', one place in leening. That is the only Dwyka in the three rolls of 1823 read for LEAD-0350. THIS IS THE GROUND OF THOMPSON'S RETURN: after Jakhals-Fonteyn he crossed the Dwyka and Bloed rivers to a Hartebeest-Fonteyn at midnight, and next day changed horses 'at the Veld-Cornet Olivier's, near the Buffalo River' (SRC-635). A veldcornet Olivier, a Hartebeest Fonteyn and a Buffels Rivier all stand in this one ward. [TO VERIFY that they are the same places] *** BOTHA. *** None in the Kleyne Swarte Berg or Roggeveld wards.
