Get[uigen]: JACOBIS GIDION LOUW Jup:Z. / HELENA ANTONIA VAN AARDE / GERRIT JACOBIS NEL / MARTA G[?]ONDINA NEL. Several readings are uncertain in this hand and are marked rather than smoothed: the mother's 'Lonisa' is Louisa elsewhere, the patronymic suffixes 'Alb:Z.' and 'Jup:Z.' are read but not expanded, and the fourth witness's middle name is not legible. *** THIS IS WHERE THE NAME GIDEON ENTERS THIS FAMILY, AND IT COMES IN FROM THE LOUWS. *** The child is JACOBIS GIDION and the first witness is JACOBIS GIDION LOUW - the same two names, on the same line, and the mother is a LOUW. Under 5b the second son takes the mother's father's name, and this reads as exactly that. Four generations later the element is still running: this child's son is Jacobus Johannes Gideon Nel (PER-001816), his great-grandson is Kola (PER-000219), and a younger brother born 1863 is called GIDEON JACOBUS LOUW NEL, which carries the Louw and the Gideon together in one name. *** AND IT BEARS DIRECTLY ON LEAD-0343. *** The 1888 Calvinia register (SRC-629) writes GILLIAM where this project has held GIDEON, for both Kola and his grandfather. This 1813 entry is seventy-five years older, is in a clearer hand, and plainly reads GIDION, with a witness of the same name to anchor it. THE OLDER AND BETTER-ANCHORED FORM IS GIDEON. That does not overturn the 1888 reading - two independent readers, Melville and this project, both saw Gilliam there - but it changes what the likeliest explanation is, and the lead is reframed accordingly. The opening's other entries name Kel, Aggenbach, Tijmann, Nesthout, Engelbrecht, Kraaij, Smit, Burger, Aris, van Zijl, Louw, van Aarde, Gildenhuijzen, Jordaan, Visser, Brand, Slotte, Hanekom, Swanepoel, Bossenn, Wahl, Dorssett and Smitt, at Bokkeveld, Namaqualand, the Olifants river, Swartland, Brandenberg, Piquetberg and the Hantam. None reaches this project except the Nel entry. [TO VERIFY] the congregation: the districts served point at Clanwilliam, and FamilySearch has this man marrying at Clanwilliam in 1834, but the crop does not show a heading and no film or DGS number came with it.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
