Found by Frans on NAAIRS Catalogue entry only - the document is UNREAD. DESCRIPTION: 'OOSTHUYSEN, JAN. TESTAMENT.' | WHO: on this model's own contents the only Jan Oosthuysen who could make a will in 1722 is PER-000296, the stamvader, born 1665/1672 and dead before 1730-11-04. The next-nearest, Jan Hendrik Oosthuijsen, was EIGHT. That is a strong indication and not a proof - this model is not a census of the Cape, and 9 forbids matching an Afrikaans name alone. [TO VERIFY] | *** AND A WARNING THAT NEARLY BECAME A FACT ABOUT HIM. *** The NARSSA catalogue page for this item shows, under 'Archivist's notes', the words MENTAL PATIENT - and nothing else. Read off that page it looks like a statement about Jan Oosthuysen. IT IS NOT. Searching the same catalogue for CJ_2601 returns nine pages of items and EVERY ONE OF THEM CARRIES THE IDENTICAL NOTE: Gildenhuyse, Meyer, Frappe, Botma, Schryner, Steenbok, Smitquer, Daniels, Kloppenburg, Oosthuysen. It is a VOLUME-LEVEL annotation that the migration stamped onto every child item. | The item view also TRUNCATES it. The full note reads: 'MENTAL PATIENT. PAPERS TRANSFERRED TO RECORD COVER NO. 30260.' - which reads as ordinary archival housekeeping about one file that was moved, not as a description of anybody in the volume. | THREE INDEPENDENT SIGNS THE MIGRATION IS UNRELIABLE, all visible on one screen: every Start Date and End Date is blank although NAAIRS dates this item 1722; the page footer renders as 'Sunday, 2 January, 0000'; and the identifiers collide - GILDENHUYSE and MEYER both show CJ_2601_1_1, FRAPPE appears at _2_1 and _3_1, and BOTMA also at _3_1. | WHAT SURVIVES, AND IT IS THE USEFUL PART: CJ 2601 is a VOLUME OF TESTAMENTS, and one of them is Jan Oosthuysen's. A will names heirs, and often an origin - which is what LEAD-0001 and LEAD-0002 have been waiting on. See LEAD-0266.
