Read *** | THE FACE: 'The annexed diagram A....D represents the FREEHOLD ESTATE called NIETGENAAMD, OR NOOITGEDACHT, of 2368 Morgen of Land, situated in the FIELD CORNETCY OF BOVEN OLIFANTS RIVIER, district of George, the property of the WIDOW FRED:K BOTHA, NICOLAAS JOH:S GROBBELAAR, & JOHAN ADRIAAN BOTHA. Extending North to the TOWER WATER MOUNTAIN. S.E. contiguous to the Ground applied for by N. J. GROBBELAAR, and J. A. BOTHA. S.W. contiguous to the Ground applied for by N. GROBBELAAR. Surveyed by (Sgd.) A. EGS. PETERSEN, Sworn Land Surveyor.' Marginal: 2565 morgen and 300 morgen of vacant ground 'applied for and reported upon'. The OLIFANTS R. runs at the southern beacon C. | *** 'DISTRICT OF GEORGE' IN 1802 IS AN ANACHRONISM AND ALMOST CERTAINLY THE COPYIST'S. *** George was cut out of Swellendam on 23 April 1811, nine years after this survey. The text is TYPED on a redrawn 1966 sheet, so it is a modern transcription and not the 1802 clerk's words. In 1802 this ground was SWELLENDAM - which is exactly where the 1805 roll counts our family. 5a-ii: the reading and the citation are two claims, and here the reading is sound while one phrase in it belongs to a later hand. [TO VERIFY] against the original O.S.F. 4-79. | *** THE HOT SPRING, AND IT IS IDENTIFIABLE. *** The face marks 'Cold Spr.' and 'HOT SPRING' side by side near the northern beacon, under the TOWER WATER MOUNTAIN. Tower Water is TOORWATER or TOVERWATER - magic water - and TOVERWATERS POORT is Uniondale farm No. 11, whose label point lies ONE KILOMETRE from Nietgenaamd's. The mountain, the poort and the farm are all named for this spring. So the answer to Frans's question about a fountain on this ground is a hot one, and it is on the oldest sheet in the division. | *** WHAT IT DOES NOT GIVE, WHICH IS WHAT IT WAS FETCHED FOR: LOAN-PLACE NAMES. *** Its neighbour clauses name PEOPLE - 'the Ground applied for by N. J. Grobbelaar and J. A. Botha' - and not PLACES, where the 1832 sheets name Schoongezigt, Roodeheuvel, Buffels Klip, Diepe Kloof and the rest. In 1802 the ground round about had no titled names to cite. That is consistent with everything else about this cornetcy in 1802 and it means this sheet cannot name a Modder Fonteyn. THE 1819 RUN IS NOW THE BEST HOPE for neighbour clauses that name places. | A FREEHOLD ESTATE IN 1802 IS ITSELF THE ODDITY. Everything else in the division was loan ground for another thirty years. Why this one farm was freehold, and under an O.S.F. title, is not explained here. | THE VERSO is all later: Lots A to F deducted on 1883 deeds 1883-3-315 to 320, Portion 11 in 1939 (dgm 724/1939), and servitude pipe lines surveyed 1950-51 (dgms 4066/50 and 6096/51) - which is what one would expect of ground with a hot spring on it. | SAME SURVEYOR AS THE 1832 RUN: A. Egidius Petersen signed this in 1802 and Schoongezigt, Roodeheuvel, Buffels Klip and Fontyn thirty years later. One man surveyed this cornetcy's first farm and then most of the rest of it.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
