TRANSCRIPTION. 1. Name: Elsje Johanna van der Merwe. 2. Birth-place: WELBEDACHT, DIST. CALVINIA. 3. Parents: Jacobus Alewyn van der Merwe, Elizabeth Maria van der Merwe [born Theron]. 4. Age: FORTY-SEVEN YEARS. 5. Condition in life: Farmer. 6. Married. 7. Day of decease: THE 19TH OF MARCH 1882. 8. At what house: OUEMUUR, DIST. CALVINIA. 10. Property: movable and immovable, value about 5000 pounds. 9. TWELVE CHILDREN, in the order the form gives them: Jacobus Adriaan; Anna Magdalena Wilhelmina; Jacobus Alewyn; Johannes Jacobus Wilhelmus; Carel Aron; Elsje Johanna; Schalk Willem Burger; Elsje Johanna Maria; Hendrik Jacobus; Izaak Johannes; Elizabeth Maria; Walter Petrus Burger. Some are marked minor and some major. THE FOURTH NAME IS ALMOST CERTAINLY THIS PROJECT'S DIRECT ANCESTOR and it is not written the way he is written anywhere else. PER-000762 was born in March 1863 and was nineteen and alive when this was filed, so he must be on the list; "Johannes Jacobus Wilhelmus" is the only entry he can be, and every other record calls him FRANS Jacobus Wilhelmus. Either the clerk wrote Johannes for Frans or the reading of the hand is wrong. Recorded as it stands. [TO VERIFY] HER HUSBAND'S 1904 DEATH FORM SAYS HE HAD NINE CHILDREN and this one names twelve, twenty-two years earlier. Both are what an informant told a clerk. Three of the twelve dying between 1882 and 1904 would reconcile them exactly, and so would a miscount on either sheet. SHE DIED ON OUDE MUUR, which this model already held as the family's ground, and she was born on WELBEDACHT, which is where she was married in 1854. Her estate was worth about 5,000 pounds.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
