The citation as it was given

INDEX ENTRY, NOT THE PAGE. Christina Elizabeth Nel, female, BIRTH 22 AUGUST 1867, baptised 22 September 1867 at Calvinia. Parents JACOBUS JOHANNES GIDEON NEL and ANNA JACOBUS VON WYK, which is the indexer's reading of Anna Jacoba van Wyk. IT CLOSES LEAD-0159 AND IT CLOSES IT TWICE OVER. That lead asked whether the Jacobus Johannes Gideon Nel who stood at the 1887 baptism of PER-001771 was this woman's father, reasoning only from the Cape naming order. He was. AND THE OTHER WITNESS AT THAT FONT, ANNA JACOBA VAN WYK, IS HER MOTHER. Two of the four witnesses at that christening were the child's maternal grandparents, which is the pattern 5b describes and which this project could not see until now. IT ALSO MOVES HER BIRTH. This model held 1868, from the compiled tree. The register index gives 22 August 1867, and her own 1895 death notice (SRC-400) gives her age as 27 years 6 months on 28 February 1895, which computes to a birth about 28 August 1867. Two independent records agreeing to within a week beat a bare year on a tree. ONE THING STILL DOES NOT FIT. The 1885 marriage register (SRC-379) enters her as 18 on 15 June 1885; a birth in August 1867 makes her 17 that day, six weeks short. A stated age is not a birth date and the clerk rounded up or erred. Recorded, not resolved.

Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
