TRANSCRIPTION. Heading: "1895 Huwelik bevestigd te VENTERSTAD, in de Parochie van VENTERSTAD, in het Distrikt van ALBERT, 1895". No. 57, 12 Februarij 1895. "Johannes Barnhard Malherbe", ouderdom 32, JONGMAN, rang of beroep SLAGER, WOONPLAATS TIJDENS HET HUWELIK: PRETORIA, na huw. geboden, toestemming a dash. "Augusta Cornelia Neser", 26, JONGEDOCHTER, woonplaats RIETJIESFONTEIN, VENTERSTAD. "Getrouwd ten huize van den heer J. F. van Zyl te Venterstad voormeld, na huw. geboden, door mij A. D. LUCKHOFF, Pred. der Ned. Geref. Kerk." Signed by the parties J. B. Malherbe and A. C. Neser, in the presence of J. F. van Zyl and D. F. van Zyl. THE FIELD THAT MATTERS IS WOONPLAATS, AND IT CHANGES AN ARGUMENT THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN MAKING ON INFERENCE. Story S032 argues that Johannes Barnard Malherbe is very probably the John Malherbe of Deneys Reitz's Commando, killed on Spion Kop on 24 January 1900 - and it concedes, as the weakest link in the chain, that these were TULBAGH men in a PRETORIA commando, ordinary enough but an assumption. IT IS NO LONGER AN ASSUMPTION FOR HIM. Five years before the war he was living in Pretoria and entered his trade as a butcher. A Cape-born man resident in Pretoria in 1895 is exactly the man who rides out with the Pretoria commando in 1899. IT DOES NOT PROVE THE IDENTIFICATION and it does not touch the age objection to his brother Isaak. What it removes is one of the two doubts the story lists against it. HE MARRIED AT THIRTY-TWO, in a private house rather than a church, to a woman of the district she lived in. The minister, A. D. LUCKHOFF, is the same man who had baptised the bride at Colesberg in 1866 (SRC-397).
