TRANSCRIPTION. A. van der Merwe, VADER". "Anna Maria Visagie", ouderdom 17, JONGE DOCHTER, woonplaats HANTAM, toestemming "I. H. Visagie, VADER". "Getrouwd in de Kerk te Hantam voormeld, na huwelyks-geboden, door my H. L. de Villiers, pred. consulent der Ned. Ger. Gemeente te Hantam." Signed by the parties: "S. W. B. van der Merwe" and "A. M. Visage". THIS CONFIRMS THE FIRST MARRIAGE AND IT PINS IT TO THE RIGHT MAN. The consent is given by J. A. VAN DER MERWE as father, which is Jacobus Adriaan van der Merwe, PER-001631. There is no name matching here: the father is identified, the district is right, and the age fits. He was born on 23 February 1833, so on this day he was 17 and six weeks short of 18, which is why his father had to consent. The register rounds him to 18. IT ALSO SETTLES A DOUBT THIS PROJECT RAISED AND GOT WRONG. On 11 Aug 2026, before this document arrived, LEAD-0160 argued that a wife dead in 1853 would have had to marry him before he was twenty-one and that she probably belonged to a different man of the same name. She did not. Janet Melville (SRC-373) was right about the first wife all along; what she was wrong about was reading her as the MOTHER of PER-000762, which SRC-378 disposes of. Two separate claims, one sound and one not, from the same compiler. HER FATHER, "I. H. Visagie", is Izaak Heremias Visagie 1792-1867, FamilySearch LZP9-YQL, whose wife was JOHANNA SOPHIA VAN DER MERWE 1796-1872, LWFG-THQ. So the first wife was already a van der Merwe on her mother's side. Neither parent is entered as a person: they are collateral to a marriage that left no children, and 9a keeps this line in as ancestry and not as a community.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
