The citation as it was given

TRANSCRIPTION. Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe, died 15 MAY 1956 at Voortrekkerstraat, Brandvlei, aged 93 - the form gives the birth date in the age field as 24 MAART 1863. Occupation RUSTENDE. Cause of death CARCINOMA OF STOMACH, duration about six months, attended by Dr D. A. LOUW. PLACE OF BIRTH: PLAAS MATJIESFONTEIN, DISTRIK CALVINIA. Burial: BRANDVLEI KERKHOF. Informant F. J. VAN DER MERWE, adult blood relative, of PLAAS DIKDOORNS NOORD, DISTRIK WILLISTON. THE BIRTHPLACE FIELD IS THE FIND AND IT FIXES THE DIVISION. A death notice records what the family told the Master, and this family said Matjiesfontein IN THE CALVINIA DISTRICT. That removes the Fraserburg Matjiesfonteins from LEAD-0151 as the primary candidates - it does not prove them impossible, because an informant ninety-three years after the fact can be wrong about a district, but nothing else in the record now points at Fraserburg. THE BIRTH DATE IS CONFIRMED to the day against the 1863 baptism register, SRC-378, which is written 93 years earlier and independently. PLAAS DIKDOORNS NOORD, DISTRIK WILLISTON is new ground for this family and is where the informant lived in 1956. It is not entered as a parcel; no cadastral match has been made.
