The citation as it was given

TRANSCRIPTION, verbatim: "Nevenstaande Figuur A.B.C.D.E. is gelegen in het Adjunct District Clan William en aldaar in het Onder Bokkeveld onder het Veld-Cornetschap van Heremias Cornls. Nieuwoudt zynde een Stuk Gouvernements grond in Erfpacht verzocht, genaamd de Oude muur, groot in zynen grond 1507 morgens en 432 quadt. roeden. Strekkende ten N.Z.O. en W. aan zeer klippige en bergagtige Gouvernements grond. Gemeten op last der Commissie van Inspectie voor GEORGE FARMER den 31ste January 1820. door my (Get.) Jn. Schutte, gezw. Landmeter." A HOLDER BEFORE THE VAN DER MERWES, AND AN ENGLISH NAME. The erfpacht was requested for GEORGE FARMER and measured for him on 31 January 1820. Schalk Willem Burger van der Merwe was born on this farm in 1833, so the ground changed hands, or was tenanted, between the two dates. That is the question this sheet opens. THE FIELD CORNETCY IS ONDER BOKKEVELD, not the Voor Hantam of Tygerhoek - so the two van der Merwe seats sit in different cornetcies of one division, 40 km apart. THE WATER IS WHY THE FARM EXISTS: three fountains are marked, one 'houd het geheel jaar water' and two 'gevende 4 m. water', with a third giving three months. The grazing is written 'Schrale Weiland', poor pasture. Two roads cross it, 'weg naar het Bokkeveld' and 'weg van de Hantam'. Copied from the diagram relating to Title Deed Wor. Q. 5-52 dated 20 February 1832 - a WORCESTER quitrent reference, which is where this ground was registered before Calvinia existed. 1507 morgen 432 roods is about 1,291 ha against the modern 1,595 ha, 23% more today.
