TRANSCRIPTION (Afrikaans, as written; the sheet is numbered 2, so at least one page precedes it and has not been seen). "1) JACOBUS, gebore 6/12/1809 | 2 Wynand, gebore 6/12/1809 — TWEELING, 5de geslag | 3 Caspar Johannes Jacobus gebore 13/2/1814. JACOBUS van ZYL (1) gebore 6/12/1809, getroud met 'n Mej. van Dyk(?), oorlede in 1906. Jacobus was een van die weinige voortrekkers wat vanaf PRINS ALBERT uit die westelike deel van Kaapland getrek het tot in Natal. HY WAS EEN VAN DIE VOORTREKKERS WAT TEENWOORDIG WAS BY DIE SLAG VAN BLOEDRIVIER. Na die moord van Piet Retief in 1838 het hy en nog ander van die trekkers besluit om terug te keer. Hy het sover gekom as die plaas wat later KEEROM, in die Vrystaat, genoem is. Sy plan was om op daardie plek te rus voordat hy weer verder sou trek, maar hy was waarskynlik so tevrede met daardie tydelike woonplek dat hy toe die NATALSE VOLKSRAAD van daardie tyd gevra het om die plek aan hom toe te ken. Aan sy versoek was voldoen en sowat 6000 MORG grond was aan hom as REKWESPLAAS onder die destydse okkupasiewet toegeken. Reeds voor 1866 het hy 'n plan gehad om 'n dorp op sy plaas aan te le. Hy het selfs sover gegaan om erwe te laat opmeet, maar die predikant en kerkraad van die N.G. gemeente BLOEMFONTEIN — waarvan hy self 'n OUDERLING was — het hom oorreed om van sy plan af te sien op grond van die feit 'n nuwe dorp binne die gemeentelike grense van Bloemfontein 'n nadelige uitwerking op die finansies van die gemeente sou he. In 1866 egter het hy besluit om voort te gaan met die stigting van 'n dorp op sy plaas welke dorp hy toe Brandfort genoem het. Alhoewel [erwe] vooraf verkoop is, was Brandfort eers in 1874 amptelik as dorp verklaar." | STATUS: [FAMILY]. A family history, handwritten, undated, unsigned, no sources cited.
