AN AVOWEDLY INCOMPLETE ROLL: 388 names, against 464 white men in Bantjes's Journaal, or 460 per Pretorius, or 407 in a third source. The 59 'kleurlinge' and about 200 Zulus who went with Biggar, Parker and Joyce are not named at all. Drawn up a few days after the battle near Dingaanstat. THE POINT THAT MATTERS FOR THIS PROJECT: 74 of the 388 entries carry a de Villiers/Pama code identifying the exact man - 'Pretorius, Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus (b3c1d5e11)'. The single van Zyl entry reads '* van Zyl, Jacobus' AND CARRIES NO CODE. The compilers did not establish which Jacobus van Zyl it was.
Kept verbatim. This project contradicts published genealogies and corrects a family's own oral tradition, so every claim has to be checkable by someone who was not in the room.
