The citation as it was given
16 FEBRUARY 1838, at Van Rensburg's laager, shortly after the murder of Piet Retief's party and the Weenen and Bloukrans massacres. With ammunition running out he rode his horse straight through an estimated 1,500 Zulu warriors, took powder and ball from a wagon, and rode back through them again.
