Supplied by Gives the stamvader as coming to South Africa IN 1691 and settling at DRAKENSTEIN, taken up as a FREE IMMIGRANT ON THE SAME TERMS AS THE FRENCH HUGUENOTS - sixty morgen rent-free, passage paid, on condition that all produce (wheat, vegetables, wine) was sold to the Company and that he stayed at least five years. Married Johanna Maartens 1703; SEVEN children listed. Also traces the eldest son Gerhardus's line to Uitenhage, the farm STEENEKOPPIES, then Tarkastad, Sterkstroom and Steynsburg, and into the Great Trek with Piet Retief. CONFLICTS TO NOTE: the VOC record has him at the Cape from 1685 and a free burgher from 15 Aug 1690, so '1691' is when he took up land at Drakenstein, not when he arrived. Seven children where the tree and FamilySearch both give nine. Marriage 1703 where the tree gives about 1702 and a son baptised 23 Dec 1702. The 60-morgen Huguenot terms are not yet verified for him personally [TO VERIFY]. The published text uses a racial slur of its period for the frontier wars; paraphrased here.
