FRANS'S 5x-GREAT-GRANDFATHER (gen 7). Born a foundling at Lorient, Brittany, 4 Oct 1747. Officer of the French East India Company, then a Dutch East India Company sea captain; Equipage Master for the DEIC 1786-87 and Captain of the Port at Simonstown 1803-06. Cartographer, farmer, public commissioner, decorated freemason at Lorient and the Cape. ALSO A SLAVER - recorded plainly because it is true. Married Johanna Margaretha Nothlingh, Cape Town, 2 Feb 1777. Died 19 Graave Street, Cape Town, aged 64. [SRC-071]

Where does "van Helslandt" come from? - ANSWERED: a childless uncle by marriage, 1800

The line reads, as far as it can be read from the crop: '191 | Helsland | Charles van | S:t Dumen[ij]'. Two names this project carries appear beside each other a century before it holds either at the Cape.
What would settle it A van Helsland named as a witness at the 1818 baptism, or as a spouse anywhere in the two preceding generations. Failing that, the name stays unexplained and the 1708 entry stays a coincidence of two surnames on one line.
