Louis XIV revokes the Edict of Nantes

22 October 1685 · global

The Edict of Fontainebleau ends toleration of French Protestants and drives the Huguenots out. Three years later the first of them are landed at the Cape and settled at DRAKENSTEIN - the same valley where the stamvader takes his free-burgher land in 1691. He arrives five months before this edict and spends his farming life among its refugees. [Wikipedia: Edict of Fontainebleau; Huguenots in South Africa]
