A million kilograms of wool through the poort
June 1870 · district · Klaarstroom
[SRC-010, Rose Willis Klaarstroom cameo. TERTIARY, TO VERIFY] By June 1870 more than a million kilograms of wool had gone through Meiringspoort to Mossel Bay. Three tollhouses levied fees on animals and vehicles; the first, on the farm Varkenskraal on the Klaarstroom side, was built in 1857 for the tollkeeper Mr Rankin, who kept it fifteen years and doubled as the district's unlicensed physician.
