Five years and three months in the Company's service, and then he stops being a servant and starts being a settler. EVERY PERSON IN THIS PROJECT DESCENDS FROM THAT DECISION. In the same year the ship that carried him out was lost near the Shetland Islands on her fifth homeward voyage.
