Two Oosthuizen daughters die in the smallpox year

1713 · regional · Drakenstein

[SRC-074] Barbara, five, and Jannetje, three, both die in 1713 - the year the smallpox epidemic brought ashore on a Company fleet killed roughly a quarter of the colony's people and devastated the Khoi far worse. The family loses two of its nine children in one year. Cause is inferred from the date and is NOT stated in the record [TO VERIFY]; the burial registers would settle it.
