Wool becomes the district staple

By mid-century stock farming is the chief industry of the Prince Albert district and WOOL is its chief product. A good shepherd was "goud werd" and earned a pound a month with rations. In 1885 heavy snow around Beaufort West killed at least twenty shepherds.
