Production fell to as little as seven ounces a month the following year. The Registrar of Claims withdrew in 1896; by 1898 Spreeuwfontein and Klein Waterval were abandoned. Atherstone's 1872 verdict, and the twenty silent years that followed it, had been the correct reading of the ground all along.
