Research notes
Egerton township sheet CQ-8DA Z13, East London.
*** THIS SHEET IS NOT IN THE KAROO. *** Read in full on 1 Aug 2026, during an audit checking whether every source file had actually been mined. It had one line of description, "Egerton plot plan, Prince Albert division", and that description is wrong. What the sheet says: EGERTON, sheet CQ-8DA Z13, scale 1:1200, "SAAMGESTEL EN GETEKEN IN DIE KANTOOR VAN DIE LANDMETER-GENERAAL, KAAPSTAD", completed 29-1-1968. Its corner co-ordinates are 32 55 52.5 SOUTH, 27 45 00 EAST. Prince Albert is 33 13 S, 22 02 E: this is five hundred kilometres EAST, at East London. The streets confirm it - one is named OOS LONDON - and a block on the sheet reads "BANTOEDORP MDANTSANE, P. PROK. 106/1973, ged. 9-3-1973", the proclamation of Mdantsane township outside East London. It shows about forty numbered residential erven off PLAAS 632. HOW IT GOT HERE is worth recording: "Egerton" was read as a Karoo place name and a parcel was created for it. Nothing was ever hung on that parcel - no ownership, no neighbours, no story, no links - which is itself the signal. See LEAD-0061.
The research behind this page, kept separate from it: dated working notes, open questions, and what is not yet settled.
