They are not rival birth dates: 1786 is the birth and 1787 the christening, fifteen months apart, and this single entry carries both. 'Lives of the Earlier Krugers' (SRC-717) gives 'b. 8.12.1787', which is the christening date carried as a birth, and De Villiers & Pama is cited for it on FamilySearch. *** AND THE PAARL BAPTISM DOES NOT ARGUE AGAINST A KOUP BIRTH. *** 5, third place rule: a baptism names a CHURCH, not a home. His parents married at Paarl on 4 October 1785, so Paarl is the family's church; the death notice (SRC-719) puts the birth itself at Van der Byls Kraal. SPELLING AS THE REGISTER HAS IT, not normalised: the father is written FIDERIK ARNOLDUS KRIGER and the mother ENGELA FRANSCIENA GRISEL.
