Staat des levens: Boer. 6. Gehuwd of ongehuwd, Weduwnaar of Weduwe: Widower. 7. De dag van het afsterven: 10th July 1859. 8. Aan welk huis, of waar de persoon gestorven is: WILGERBOSCH DRIFT, District of Beaufort. 9. Namen van de Kinderen van den Overleden, all majors: 1 Diedrick Arnoldus, 2 Hendrick Jacobus, 3 Johanna Elizabeth, 4 Zacharia Jacomina, 5 Anna Catharina, 6 Pieter Ernst Kruger. 10. Goederen: 1 Plaats VAN DER BYLS KRAAL [morgen figure not legible], 100 Sheep, [?Paarden], [?Oxen], Huismeubelen.' *** THIS IS THE OLDEST ATTESTATION OF THE FARM NAME THIS PROJECT HAS. *** It puts the name on the ground in 1786, the year of his birth, which is 32 years before the joint will of 1818 (SRC-717) and 45 before diagram B355/1831. It also ends any doubt that PER-000012, a bare grantee row created from a WELGEBOSCH DRIFT grant of 31 December 1838, is this man: he died at Wilgerbosch Drift and his estate holds Van der Byls Kraal, whose title Bf.W.Q. 4-28 carries that same date. *** READ THE BIRTHPLACE FOR WHAT IT IS. *** A notice filed in 1861 reporting a birthplace of 1786 is a recollection at 75 years, given by an informant, not a contemporary entry. The same form gives his age as 70 where 1786 to 1859 is 73, which is the ordinary looseness of these returns. It is good evidence that the family held the farm to be his birthplace; it is not an eyewitness record of 1786.
