Somma 274 mannen, 169 vrouwen, 290 zoons, 301 dogters. | FOLIO 6 CARRIES FOUR OOSTHUIZEN HOUSEHOLDS AND OCKERT BRITS TOGETHER: Ockert Brits with Johanna [?]Goitsch at line 12, then Jacobus Oosthuijsen and Dina Brits at 15, Jan Oosthuijsen de oude and Anna Botha at 16, Jan Oosthuijsen d'Jonge and Maria Coetser at 17, and Willem Maarten Oosthuijsen at 18. Checksum exact: 25 rows, one widow row with a dash, Pr Transport 120 plus 24 equals Transporteere 144. | SCAN QUALITY MATTERS HERE AND IS RECORDED ON PURPOSE. The archive serves three sizes. The api/file/v1/img endpoint is hard-capped at h=1000, which gives a 2249x1000 image of a TWO-PAGE SPREAD - about forty pixels per ruled row, the scale at which this project misread Oliphants for Ockerts on 18 Aug 2026. The api/file/v1/render endpoint returns 5000 px for about 600 kB and is what these readings were taken from; the original TIFF is roughly 200 MB and was not needed. Note that render answers 404 to HEAD and 200 to GET. | THE ROLL CHECKS ITSELF. Each folio opens on a Pr Transport and closes on a Transporteere, so the difference is that folio's own count and every transcription can be tested against it before anything is built on it. | A THIRD ROLL IS IN REACH AND IS THE SAME SHAPE. Inv. 4262 is the 1770 volume and its SWELLENDAM roll opens at scan 0090, folio 1 closing on Transporteere 21|15|22|25. Its first folio already carries JACOBA VAN EERDEN, WIDOW OF GERRIT VAN DER MERWE D'OUDE, with SCHALK WILLEM VAN DER MERWE GERRITSZ and HENDRIK VAN DER MERWE GERRITSZ beside her - a widow and two sons, all patronymic Gerritsz, which is the van der Merwe leg appearing on the same ground as the Oosthuizens. Three rolls a decade apart make 1751, 1760 and 1770 a series rather than three documents. | *** THESE ROLLS DO NOT NAME FARMS, AND THAT DATES A PAGE THIS PROJECT COULD NOT DATE. *** Frans noticed itand it holds across all three volumes. The column set runs: Mannen, Vrouwen, Zoons, Dogters, Knegts, Slaven and the slave sub-columns, then Paarden, Runderen, Schapen, Varkens, Wynstocken, Leggers Wyn, then Tarwe, Rog and Garst each gesaaijt and gewonnen, and it ENDS ON THE WEAPONS - Snaphanen, Deegens, Pistolen. Read off the 1770 leaf directly; the 1751 legend and the 1760 leaf agree. THERE IS NO FARMS COLUMN IN 1751, 1760 OR 1770. | THE 1808 ROLL HAS ONE (SRC-485), naming each household's ground with 'gel: aan' and a river. So the column is a LATER ADDITION TO THE FORM, appearing somewhere between 1770 and 1808. | TWO CONSEQUENCES. FIRST, A LIMIT WORTH STATING PLAINLY: these three rolls place a household IN A DISTRICT and not on named ground. 'Who held which farm' cannot be answered from them at all, only 'who was in Swellendam'. For a project about land that is a real boundary on what this series can deliver. | SECOND, IT DATES SRC-483. That page - the farms column carrying wolfe fonteijn and de buffelskloof aan de Swartberg, and the contested Ockerts-or-Oliphants kraal - arrived with no title, no folio, no film and no repository. Its structure now gives it a terminus post quem: A PAGE WITH A FARMS COLUMN IS POST-1770. That does not identify it, and 5a-ii still applies, but it removes three decades of candidates and it was got from the document's own shape rather than from a guess. | *** THE 1760 ROLL IS TRANSCRIBED IN FULL AND EVERY CHECKSUM RECONCILES. *** Fourteen folios, Somma 274 mannen, 169 vrouwen, 290 zoons, 301 dogters. Six folios close on the Vrouwen column independently of the Mannen column. The transcription is in the private folder, 1760 Opgaafrol. | AGAINST 1751 (SRC-488) THE DISTRICT GREW 62% IN NINE YEARS - 639 burghers to 1034 - and the children grew faster than the adults in both sexes, which is a frontier filling by birth rather than by arrival. FIVE OOSTHUIZEN HOUSEHOLDS BECAME SEVEN AND NOBODY LEFT: Jan became 'de oude' because a 'd'jonge' set up beside him, and Willem Maarten appears as a single man with no wife. | AND THE ROLL CONFIRMS THIS MODEL'S CHILD LIST FROM OUTSIDE IT. Jacobus Oosthuijsen and Dina Brits are entered with FOUR SONS AND ONE DAUGHTER. The parentage rows give exactly that for children born by 1760 - Catharina 1751, then Johannes Jacobus, Ockert Jacobus, Jacobus Nicolaas and Jacobus Petrus - with Gerrit Johannes born 10 Feb 1760 not yet counted, which also dates the roll's collection to about February. A government census and a compiled tree agreeing to the child is worth more than either alone. | THREE KINDS OF ROW CARRY NO MAN, established from the document: a WIDOW, an ABSENTEE marked 'voor Swellendam' whose people are counted in his home district (folio 12 alone has thirteen), and a SOLDIER'S WIFE - 'Elisabeth Nordje getrouwt met den Soldaat Godlieb Caspari' on folio 5, counted in Vrouwen with no burgher man. That third category is covered by neither of the others and it is why the 1751 file's Mannen total could not be reconciled by widows alone. | 19 Aug 2026: the 1770 roll (SRC-490) completes a three-point series. Swellendam burghers 639 (1751), 1034 (1760), 1692 (1770) - doubling about every eleven years, against +20% at the Cape over the same nineteen years.
