- Faure's TENURE DATES (1798-1810) and the 1811 George proclamation are still [TO VERIFY] against an archival source - the Cape almanacs or KAB 1/SWM, and the proclamation itself. That he held the office of landdrost te Zwellendam IN 1809 is no longer web-sourced: it is stated in MOOC8/28.22, 26.65 and 25.18. SRC-549.

(1) ANTHONY ALEXANDER FAURE, b. Stellenbosch 5 April 1758, d. SWELLENDAM 8 January 1824, was LANDDROST OF SWELLENDAM from 1798 to 1810 - the office he held through the 1795 rebellion, when the burghers took the drostdy from him and the British restored him to it in November. (2) GEORGE WAS PROCLAIMED A SEPARATE DISTRICT ON 23 APRIL 1811 because the Swellendam magistracy was judged too large, and the new district "embraced the present Districts of MOSSEL BAY, CALITZDORP, OUDTSHOORN, UNIONDALE and KNYSNA". | *** WHAT THAT DOES TO THE 1809 INVENTORY. MOOC8/28.63 was taken on the farm on 23 April 1809 and its closing formula reads "Ten mynen overstaan: A:A: Faure" - in my presence. A landdrost's authority was TERRITORIAL. If the man presiding was the landdrost of Swellendam, then de Modder Fonteyn stood in the DISTRICT OF SWELLENDAM. *** | AND CITRUSDAL WAS NOT IN IT. Citrusdal lay in the district of Tulbagh, and from 1808 in the new district of CLANWILLIAM, four hundred kilometres from Swellendam and across two other magistracies. The landdrost of Swellendam had no business there. | WHEREAS THE SOUTHERN OLIFANTS WAS IN IT, AND STOPPED BEING IN IT TWO YEARS LATER. The Olifants that rises on the Traka and runs past Oudtshoorn (SRC-460, SRC-462) was Swellendam ground in April 1809 and George ground from April 1811 - which is why the same households appear in the GEORGE opgaafrol of 1816 (SRC-459) WITHOUT HAVING MOVED. The district came to them. | IT ALSO FITS THE REST OF THE FAMILY'S PAPER. Ockert married Susanna Catharina van Tonder at SWELLENDAM in 1783; his son Ockert Almero married Adriana Cecilia Venter at SWELLENDAM in 1807; and the 1867 death notice (SRC-451) gives Jacobus Johannes's birth in 1784 as the DIVISION OF SWELLENDAM. Four independent records, one district. | WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED, and it is the whole weight of the argument: that this A.A. Faure IS the landdrost, and that "ten mijnen overstaan" on a farm inventory always means the district officer rather than a commissioned member of the Orphan Chamber. Both are ordinary readings and neither is checked. Until they are, this is the strongest evidence on the question and it is not proof. Faure IS the landdrost: MOOC8/28.22 of 17 May 1809 - three weeks after our inventory - names "den LANDDROST TE ZWELLENDAM de heer A:A: Faure", and MOOC8/26.65 and 25.18 call him landdrost/vendumeester of Zwellendam too. (2) That "ten mijnen overstaan" means the district officer and not a commissioned member of the Orphan Chamber: at MOOC8/25.40, on a farm expressly "onder 't district van Zwellendam", the men attending him are "den eerste boode ALHIER Hendrik van As de jonge" and the secretary J.H. Frouenfelder - the Swellendam drostdy's own establishment. | WHAT IS STILL UNCHECKED HERE: the TENURE DATES 1798-1810 remain web-sourced, and so does the 1811 George proclamation. What is now documentary is that he held the office AT THE DATE THAT MATTERS.
