[GRAVE GRV-0027] From his headstone in the Botma burial ground on Vredendal / Gatsplaas, Spreeufontein: 'TER GEDACHTENIS van CORNELIS JACOBUS BOTMA, GEB. 19 NOVEMBER 1867, OVERL. 30 JANUARI 1910.' Both dates read cleanly off the stone. A verse follows and is partly under vegetation in the photograph; it is not transcribed here. HUSBAND OF PER-000036, Johanna Maria Magdalena BothmaH, who lies beside him and whose 1939 death notice calls her a WIDOW - he died 1910, twenty-nine years before her. That is an inference from the plot and the word 'widow', not a record, and it is marked as one [TO VERIFY]. He is on this site because he is on this ground: 6 takes people related to the land whether or not they are in the tree, and this is the Botma family that found the first gold on Spreeuwfontein and laid out Gatsplaas.
[FS LKTV-JLQ, 9 Aug 2026] THE MARRIAGE IS NOW A RECORD, NOT AN INFERENCE: he married JOHANNA MARIA MAGDALENA LE GRANGE at PRINCE ALBERT on 11 APRIL 1887; nine children. He was BORN ON THE FARM - FamilySearch gives his birthplace as Spreeufontein, Prince Albert, 19 November 1867, christened there 1 March 1868 - and his BURIAL is recorded as "plaas Gatsplaas [Spreeufontein] Prins Albert", which is a second document using the name Gatsplaas for this ground. His parents are Frans Stephanus BotmaM (PER-000323) and Johanna Geertruida BrinkM (PER-001604).
These are working notes, not finished prose: they carry the reasoning, the corrections and the things still marked to verify. They are kept here so the page itself can read as what is known.
