[SRC-259] The generation between Louis van BengaleM and Clara HerbstH. The Tulbagh book does not name her - it says only that Clara was the GRANDDAUGHTER of the freed slave Louis of Bengal - so her identity comes from the private tree and the book supplies the position. Recorded here so the descent is visible rather than implied. Her own dates are unknown; the bound shown is her daughter's death. [TO VERIFY]
[15 Aug 2026] HER TREE ID WAS WRONG AND HER DATES WERE A PLACEHOLDER; both are corrected. The id on this row resolved to CAREL JANSZ VAN BENGAL, a different person entirely - caught by the guard on the FamilySearch fill, which refuses a match unless the tree's name and years agree with the row. The right row is baptised before 2 March 1659 and died about 1743, so the "before 1714" shown here was never hers: it was her daughter's death, standing in while her own dates were unknown. They are known now, and she outlived Clara by about twenty-nine years.
[15 Aug 2026] THE PRIVATE TREE HOLDS LOUIS VAN BENGALE TWICE AND THE TWO ROWS DISAGREE ABOUT WHAT HE WAS TO LYSBETH SANDERS. One row, with no dates, stands as her FATHER; a second, born about 1652 and died 1716, stands as her HUSBAND, and their two daughters carry the patronymic LOUISZ. Lysbeth was baptised before 2 March 1659, so the dated row cannot be her father - he would be seven years older than his daughter, which the chronological test rejects outright.
THE WHOLE DESCENT TURNS ON THIS. If Lysbeth is his daughter, Clara HerbstH is his granddaughter and the Tulbagh book is describing blood. If she is his wife, Clara - her daughter by Johann Herbst - is his STEPgranddaughter and the line does not carry his ancestry at all. The published book says granddaughter; the tree, read one way, says otherwise. NOTHING IS BEING DECIDED HERE. [TO VERIFY] LEAD-0206.

Which is right? If he is her father, Clara HerbstH is his granddaughter and the descent this project publishes is blood. If he is her husband, Clara is his stepgranddaughter and the line carries none of his ancestry.
