[22 Sep 2026] *** THE LOAN PLACE IS NAMED KANDELAARSRIVIER ON ITS OWN SURVEY. *** 'Nevenstaande Figuur A. B. C. D. betekend de Lenings Plaats Kandelaarsrivier groot in hare grond 2945 Morgen & 200 Q. Roeden gelegen in t Veld C. Attacquas Kloof in t District George.' Surveyed on the order of the Land Drost and Heemraden for J.G. VAN LOGGERENBERG on 21 January 1818 by B.J. Duminy, sworn surveyor. BOUNDARIES: north to the farm of A. OLIVIER, south to the farm KLEIN DOORNRIVIER, east to the KLIPPE RIVIER, west to the MORASRIVIER. The Kandelaarsrivier runs through the figure north to the Olifants, with the Weg na de Kaap crossing it, the Weg na de Oliphantsrivier and the Weg na Du Plessis at the top, a Rooidam at the foot, and the woonhuis marked beside the river. The face carries the government ground around it: about 2000 morgen north, 3000 east 'Carro veld... met geen water voorzien', 2500 and 3000 morgen south and west. LOTS K, L, M, N and O and a 'No. 1' are drawn inside the figure - the later subdivisions - which is why the modern farm 170 is 1,684 ha where the loan place was 2945 morgen 200 sq roods, about 2,524 ha. IT NAMES THE RIVER OF THE 1765 GRANT: RLR 19 p. 94 (SRC-667) puts Jacobus Oosthuizen's loan place 'aan de Canalands rivier', and Sparrman's map of 1775-76 draws a 'Canna' river rising at 'Cannas hoogte' on this stretch (SRC-434). Kandelaars, Canna, Canalands: one water.
