Extending N.[E]. to the place KEURFONTYN distance 700 roods, East to the place NOTTE VALLY dist:e 1000 roods, South to the KANGA MOUNTAINS, West to the same and to the LOAN PLACE WILGEHOUTE RIVIER. Surveyed by me, AEGS PETERSEN.' A marginal note offers 'about 6000 Morgen of poor ground ... without water, of which 3000 Morgen is applied for by J. E. Terblan[che]'. Later CANCELLED, Rem. of Farm 394 (CCT 23473/77). | *** AND:S VAN TONDEREN IS THE WIFE'S SURNAME. *** Ockert Jacobus married SUSANNA CATHARINA VAN TONDER (PER-000119); a Johannes Jacobus van Tonder stood godfather at Roodezand in 1796 (SRC-518) and a Roelof van Tonder at Graaff-Reinet in 1799 (SRC-515). A van Tonderen applying for ground in this very cornetcy in 1832 is the wife's people ON THE SAME GROUND. IT IS NOT AN IDENTIFICATION - van Tonder is not a rare name and no kinship is shown here - but it is the first time that surname and this cornetcy have met. LEAD-0258 is where the van Tonders are being worked. | THE EARLIER NAME MATTERS TOO: 'before known by the name of [?Fogelstruys]'. The J 91 roll lists a 'SCHILPAD OF VOGELSTRUIS' (SRC-525). Whether that is this ground under a third name is not established. [TO VERIFY] | AND IT ANSWERS FRANS'S QUESTION SIDEWAYS: the four farms bracketing 43 uuren carry STREAMS, not fountains - Schoongezigt a 'Lasting Stream', a 'Water Course' and the Olifants itself; Buffels Klip a 'Lasting Stream'; Roodeheuvel water on part and 'no water sweet grass' over the rest. The fountain in this cornetcy is a farm name, not a feature on those four.
