Sworn 29-30 April 1751, issued 1 May 1751. 17 folios, scans 0299-0315. | FOLIO 5 IS WHY THIS ROW EXISTS: line 12 reads OCKERT BRITZ and CATHARINA PIJL, with one son and one daughter. Read here off the 5000 px scan, not taken on trust. The folio's own arithmetic confirms the reading of the page: Pr Transport 92 men, Transporteere 115, and 23 household heads counted on it. Two widow rows on the same folio, Wed:e Pieter van der Merwe and Wed:e Joseph Jordan, carry a DASH in Mannen and a mark in Vrouwen, which establishes that a widow is not counted as a man. | SCAN QUALITY MATTERS HERE AND IS RECORDED ON PURPOSE. The archive serves three sizes. The api/file/v1/img endpoint is hard-capped at h=1000, which gives a 2249x1000 image of a TWO-PAGE SPREAD - about forty pixels per ruled row, the scale at which this project misread Oliphants for Ockerts on 18 Aug 2026. The api/file/v1/render endpoint returns 5000 px for about 600 kB and is what these readings were taken from; the original TIFF is roughly 200 MB and was not needed. Note that render answers 404 to HEAD and 200 to GET. | THE ROLL CHECKS ITSELF. Each folio opens on a Pr Transport and closes on a Transporteere, so the difference is that folio's own count and every transcription can be tested against it before anything is built on it. | *** THESE ROLLS DO NOT NAME FARMS, AND THAT DATES A PAGE THIS PROJECT COULD NOT DATE. *** Frans noticed itand it holds across all three volumes. The column set runs: Mannen, Vrouwen, Zoons, Dogters, Knegts, Slaven and the slave sub-columns, then Paarden, Runderen, Schapen, Varkens, Wynstocken, Leggers Wyn, then Tarwe, Rog and Garst each gesaaijt and gewonnen, and it ENDS ON THE WEAPONS - Snaphanen, Deegens, Pistolen. Read off the 1770 leaf directly; the 1751 legend and the 1760 leaf agree. THERE IS NO FARMS COLUMN IN 1751, 1760 OR 1770. | THE 1808 ROLL HAS ONE (SRC-485), naming each household's ground with 'gel: aan' and a river. So the column is a LATER ADDITION TO THE FORM, appearing somewhere between 1770 and 1808. | TWO CONSEQUENCES. FIRST, A LIMIT WORTH STATING PLAINLY: these three rolls place a household IN A DISTRICT and not on named ground. 'Who held which farm' cannot be answered from them at all, only 'who was in Swellendam'. For a project about land that is a real boundary on what this series can deliver. | SECOND, IT DATES SRC-483. That page - the farms column carrying wolfe fonteijn and de buffelskloof aan de Swartberg, and the contested Ockerts-or-Oliphants kraal - arrived with no title, no folio, no film and no repository. Its structure now gives it a terminus post quem: A PAGE WITH A FARMS COLUMN IS POST-1770. That does not identify it, and 5a-ii still applies, but it removes three decades of candidates and it was got from the document's own shape rather than from a guess.
