Navorsingsnotas

[SRC-010, SRC-625] Lance Corporal, described by Rose Willis as 'a tough Irishman who had lived in Australia' and as THE FIRST MAN TO ENROL IN THE SCOTTISH SHARPSHOOTERS. Critically wounded in the running fight through DIE GANG on 2 February 1901, he hid in Wolwekloof, and when the unarmed Johannes KleuM (PER-000518) stumbled on him he took fright, reached for his gun and shot Kleu in the chest. He died of his own wounds and was found by R du Plessis only while Kleu's grave was being dug. Buried beside Trooper Gishford; AFTER THE WAR HIS WIDOW ASKED THAT HE BE REINTERRED AT THE NEAREST ANGLICAN CHURCH, which was the CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD AT KLAARSTROOM, and that is where his Guild Cross stands (CEM-477, caption 'BOYD J. -1901'). THIS PROJECT HELD HIS GRAVE IN THE eGGSA HARVEST AND HIS NAME IN A STORY FOR A MONTH WITHOUT JOINING THE TWO. His initial and unit are not fully recorded; ROHSA holds no Boyd who died in the Cape in 1901, so the war-graves databases have not caught him. [TO VERIFY]
