Prins Albert se goudstormloop op Spreeufontein ("Gatsplaas")
1891 · local · Prince Albert
Colonial Geologist Mr Bain reported alluvial gold in the drift and bed-rock crevices of the Waterfall River - 4 oz from two trials, including a nugget of 1oz 15dwt. He projected the field across 8,100 square miles of the Karoo. Cape Town syndicates formed to take claims once the fields were proclaimed, and "men without means" were publicly warned to stay away. Reported as far as Hobart, Tasmania.
