RUN 1 Oct 2026 to find the rent rolls that would close LEAD-0391 - who held de Zachte Vally between the van der Merwes of 1740 and the Therons of 1816. *** THE SERIES EXISTS AND IS NAMED: RLR, LOAN FARM REGISTERS, at the Western Cape Archives and Records Service, 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town. *** The archives' own 2026 guide lists it under property sources beside Cape Title Deeds (CTD, Inventory 1/84) and Quitrent Registers (QRR, Inventory 1/6), and says the quitrent registers run 1792-1939. *** AND NAAIRS DOES NOT INDEX ITS CONTENTS. THAT IS THE RESULT, AND IT IS WORTH AS MUCH AS A HIT. *** Not one of the 29 documents returned by the two queries is an RLR row. The farm-name query found seven, of which FOUR ARE ALIWAL NORTH - PWD 2/5/16 ref 8 (1884-85), CGR 2/1/254, CGR 3/1/103 and 3/1/104 (1905-09), all about a railway expropriation on a farm ZAGTE VALLEY in that district, and CO 4144 ref 106 (1866), a memorial of J. Sauer on the transfer of a farm 'ZACHTE...'. 5's namesake substitution: there is a second Zagte Valley 700 km away and a search on the name alone lands in it. The recognitie query returned twenty-two rows, every one of them twentieth-century municipal business about VEEPLAATS, a suburb of Port Elizabeth. *** SO THE RENT ROLLS CANNOT BE REACHED BY SEARCHING THE FARM NAME. *** They are read volume by volume, on site, by date and district. 5a-ii, the two claims, in its sharpest form: the record is known to exist and its contents are unread, and no amount of searching an index that does not cover them will change that. *** ONE GENUINE TULBAGH HIT, AND IT BEARS ON AN OPEN QUESTION. *** CSC 2/6/1/121 reference 168, 1889: 'MOTION. PETITION OF JAN JACOB DE CLERK OF ZACHTE VLEI, TULBAGH IN RE'. That is ZACHTE VLEI and not the vallei, and it establishes that a place of that name was current in Tulbagh in 1889 - which is the question PAR-000361 leaves open, since ANNEX ZACHTE VLEI No. 225 and ZACHTE VLEIS BERG No. 226 annex a parent farm that appears in no cadastral extract here. The two names are both real and they are not the same place. *** ALSO CHECKED AND NOT AVAILABLE: *** the FamilySearch catalogue refuses an unauthenticated search from this session, and the FamilySearch wiki pages on South African land and property carry nothing on RLR at all. A secondary genealogy site, vandermerwefamilytree.com, carries a snippet saying the Zachte Vallei was held as a leeningsplaats from 1732 to 1740 - the page is now 404 and the claim is UNVERIFIED and recorded as a question, not as a fact. | *** [1 OCT 2026] CORRECTION TO THE NOTE ABOVE: RLR IS NOT NEW HERE, AND THE ROUTE TO IT ALREADY EXISTS. *** This source was first written as though the loan-farm registers were an unreached series. They are not. This project already cites them in five places - RLR 18 p. 19 (SRC-665, Welbedagt aan die Olifantsrivier), RLR 19 p. 94 (SRC-667, Gamthous Bergh to Jacobus in 1765), RLR 22 pp. 49-50 and RLR 27 p. 67 (SRC-669, Ockert Olivier's ordinansie of 1772 re-issued 1777), and RLR 18 p. 349 for Armoed - and FRANS HAS READ RLR PAGES FROM THE REGISTERS HIMSELF and given them in conversation. Appel's Tabel 1 tabulates a column of Oudtshoorn-district loan farms with their RLR volume and page. So what the NAAIRS result establishes is narrower and should be stated narrowly: THE CONTENTS ARE NOT SEARCHABLE ONLINE BY FARM NAME. Reaching a given farm's entry is a matter of knowing which volume covers the year, which is how the entries this project already holds were found. *** AND THE CITATIONS WE HOLD GIVE A ROUGH VOLUME-TO-YEAR INDEX, which is the practical thing: *** RLR 15 = 1759 | RLR 16 = 1760-1762 | RLR 18 = 1763-1765 | RLR 19 = 1766 | RLR 20 = 1769 | RLR 22 = 1772-1777 | RLR 27 = 1780. That is about one and a half to two years a volume through the 1760s and 1770s. EXTRAPOLATING BACKWARDS AT THAT RATE PUTS 1740 SOMEWHERE AROUND RLR 4 TO 6 - and that is an EXTRAPOLATION FROM SEVEN POINTS, not a finding. It is written here to save a first guess at the counter, not to be cited. The volumes themselves say what years they cover.
Woordeliks gehou. Hierdie projek weerspreek gepubliseerde genealogieë en stel 'n familie se eie mondelinge oorlewering reg, so elke bewering moet nagegaan kan word deur iemand wat nie in die vertrek was nie.
