A VAN DER MERWE HOUSEHOLD ON ELSENBOSCH SIX YEARS BEFORE THIS LINE'S CHILD WAS BORN THERE. The first item of the estate is 'Een opstal staande op de lenings plaats gen:t DE KLIJNE ELSENBOSCH geleegen OVER de Vier en Twintig Rivieren', valued at Rd 1333:16 - by far the largest thing in it. Four minor children are named: Johanna Maria 8, Schalk Willem 6, Louisa Sophia 2, and Isaac Jacobus van der Merwe 6 months. Inventoried by the neighbouring farmers Jacobus Smit Alewynsz, Jacobus Stephanus Burger and Adriaan Lubbe. WHY IT MATTERS HERE: PER-001635 was born on Elsenbosch in the Piketberg district on 1 February 1794 (SRC-346), so his father PER-001639 Carel Aaron's household was on that ground then. And Carel Aaron married ELSJE JOHANNA VAN HEERDEN in January 1793, while this 1788 estate is of a CATHARINA ELIZABETH VAN HEERDEN. Two van Heerden wives on one farm five years apart is worth noticing and is not a relationship this record can yet state. *** NOTHING IS IDENTIFIED FROM IT. *** 'Klijne Elsenbosch' and 'Elsenbosch' are two names and may be two places or one; ISAAC SCHALK VAN DER MERWE is given no person row, because his link to this line is not established and 9 forbids matching on a name; and the estate also lists six enslaved people - Galand van Madagascar, Africa van de Caab, Snel van Masambiek, the boys Carolus and Adonis van de Caab, and a woman with her child Lukrees - who are recorded here because they were on that ground and the record should say so.
