Bounded N by the GROOTE SWARTEBERG, E by the converted Loan Place BUFFELS VALLY, S by vacant Gov. land extending to Land measured for JAC LE GRANGE distant 1000 Roods, W by a public outspan place. Is wholly composed of Karro grazing ground, about 500 morgen of which is moderately good pasturage the remainder of inferior quality. SURVEYED FOR DIRK JOHANNES ALBERTUS CRAFFORD, (Sgd.) J. Surveyor.' | *** FIELD-CORNETCY OF GROOTE SWARTEBERG, DISTRICT OF SWELLENDAM. *** The same field-cornetcy named on SG 649/1838 for Wolvefontein No. 137, and the 'gel: aan de Swartberg' of the 1808 opgaafrol's farms column (SRC-483). | *** THE GRANTEE IS A NAMED CRAFFORD AND HE IS ON THE FAMILYSEARCH CHART *** DIRK JOHANNES ALBERTUS CRAFFORD, 1810-1886 (FS L49S-3YB), is a brother of JOHANNES PHILIPPUS ALBERTUS CRAFFORD 1808-1887, who married SUSANNA JACOBA CATHARINA OOSTHUIZEN at Swellendam on 7 February 1830. So a Crafford held ground in this field-cornetcy in 1838, eight years after his brother married an Oosthuizen. [TO VERIFY] - the identification is on name and date against the chart, and no baptism or death notice has been read against this diagram. LEAD-0252. | THE SURVEYOR'S INITIAL DIFFERS FROM WOLVEFONTEIN'S. This sheet reads 'J. Rawstorne' and SG 649/1838 reads 'F. Rawstorne', both 1838, both this field-cornetcy. Probably one man and a difference of copyists; recorded as read rather than reconciled. | The face names Wilde Paarde Fontyn, Slang gat, Aets Kop, the GROOTE RIVER, 'Steep Hills of the Groote Swarteberg', and two roads - 'to Beaufort & over of Swarteberg' and 'to Cape Town thro Cogmans Kloof'.
