WHAT IT IS: a finding aid, not a record. It lists the surviving Cape muster rolls by district, year, record type and volume, with a link to each. Filtering on SWELLENDAM returns 70 rows. | TWO SERIES APPEAR. The F-numbers are Den Haag copies and run 1751 to 1773 in the visible page: F4183 1751, F4200 1755, F4220 1760, F4228 1762, F4244 1765, F4248 1766, F4262 1770, F4272 1772, F4276 1773, each with a roll date in mid-March. The J-numbers are the same series as the GEORGE roll of 1816 this project already reads as SRC-459 - that one is J97 - and for Swellendam they are J201 1762, J316 1752 cir., J317 for 1762, 1765 and 1788 cir., J318 1805 cir., J319 1806 FINAL ROLL, J320 1806 CONCEPT ROLL, J321 1807, J322 1808, J172 1832 cir. | *** J322, 1808, IS THE ONE TO READ FIRST. *** Ockert Oosthuijzen died about April 1809, so the 1808 roll counts his household in the last year of his life AND NAMES THE FIELD CORNETCY IT SAT IN. That is the fact that would locate de Modder Fonteyn, which is what LEAD-0220 has been asking for since 17 August. If the Swellendam rolls carry the LANDERYEN column the 1816 George roll carries - the farms a man holds, their distance from the drostdy and the landdrostdij they sort under - it names the farm outright. | THE ORDER AFTER THAT: J321 1807 as a cross-check, and because Ockert Almero married at Swellendam in October 1807 and may appear as a new householder; J319 1806, taking the FINAL roll over J320's concept for the same year, and reading the concept only where the final is doubtful; J318 1805 to bracket the run. | FOR THE OTHER TWO FARMS: J317 at 1788 cir. is nearest the Welbedagt years, since Marthinus Oosthuysen Jansz held that loan place from about 1782 and died in 1792; and F4272 or F4276, 1772 and 1773, should catch WILLEM MARTHINUS on the Kafferkuils Modder Fenteijn, where he died in 1776. | TWO CAUTIONS. J317 is listed three times, for 1762, 1765 and 1788 - one volume holding several rolls, so check which roll before reading names. And the visible page stops at 1808: THE REMAINING THREE PAGES MAY HOLD 1809 TO 1815, which would show whether Jacobus Johannes stayed on Modder Fonteyn after buying it out of the estate, and when the household left. His last trace there is the payment of 11 December 1810.
