S035 takes this line back to a christening at Paarl in 1735; this article takes the stamvader back to the Netherlands. | WHAT IT ESTABLISHES: the two places the sources give for WILLEM SCHALKSZ VAN DER MERWE are not in conflict. The VOC vrijbrief of 5 May 1661 makes him 'Willem Schalck van der Merwe, of BROECK, arquebusier on the ship Dordrecht'; the Council of Policy repeats 'van Broeck' in 1663 when he is taken back into service as adelborst at 12 guilders a month; and the Stellenbosch church register of 1692 calls him 'van OUTBEIERLANT'. The article traces the family from BABYLONIeNBROEK in the Land van Heusden en Altena, via WERKENDAM after their father's death, to OUD-BEIJERLAND in the Hoekse Waard, where the brothers married in 1660 and 1663 - so both place-names are true, of different stages of one migration. | It also proposes a second son WILLEM born 1634 and baptised at Heusden as the stamvader, and says plainly that this is a hypothesis to be tested.
