TRANSCRIPTION. "THE FARM BRASSE FONTEIN No. 371, CALVINIA. The Diagram, lettered a to h, represents 7124 Morgen 593 Square Roods (Cape Measure), of Ground, situate in the Division of Calvinia, FIELD-CORNETCY OF ACHTER HANTAM, and called Brasse Fontein. Extending: Nds to BRAS ZYN PLAATS, Sds to RIET KOLK OF OUDE MUUR, Eds to WIT KLIP, N.Wds to PIET LOUWS VALLEY. Surveyed by me, (Sgd.) Wm. DE SMIDT, Junior, Government Surveyor." On the face: Wit Fontein, Glen Sedrie, a river, and a small annotated block near the werf. A VAN DER MERWE STOOD ON THIS GROUND AT THE SURVEY. The note at the foot: "N.B. The Beacons were pointed out by me to Field-cornet's Assistant J. A. v. d. MERWE." A van der Merwe was the field-cornet's assistant for the Achter Hantam in 1878, and the initials J.A. are the ones that run in this family - Jacobus Adriaan and Jacobus Alewyn. He is not identified. This is not the van Wyk grant Frans reported; the original grant, Clv. Q. 8-37, names no grantee on this sheet. AND THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY RAISES A PROBLEM THIS PROJECT MUST NOT WAVE THROUGH. It is "RIET KOLK OF OUDE MUUR" - Riet Kolk OR Oude Muur, one farm under two names. The family's Oude Muur is farm 619, where PER-001629 was born in 1833 and died in 1904. IF THIS IS THAT OUDE MUUR, then Christina Elizabeth Nel died in 1895 on the farm adjoining her husband's family's ground, and the whole picture of that household changes. BUT THE CADASTRE SAYS IT CANNOT BE. This project pinned PAR-000200 to the polygon the Calvinia cadastre gives for PARCEL_NO 371, at -31.0232, 20.3272. Oude Muur 619 is at -31.3329, 19.2911. THAT IS ABOUT 110 KM APART, and two farms 110 km apart do not share a boundary. Something is wrong: either the boundary names a SECOND Oude Muur, which would be entirely in character - this project already holds two farms called Oude Muur and has spent the week on at least twelve called Matjiesfontein - or the cadastre's 371 is not this Brasse Fontein and PAR-000200 is pinned to the wrong ground. The field-cornetcy is ACHTER HANTAM, which is the Hantam and not the country 110 km east of it, and that argues the pin is wrong. NOT RESOLVED HERE. LEAD-0173. | [11 Aug 2026] TESTED AND THE PIN STANDS. The diagram names five neighbours and the Calvinia cadastre puts every one of them around this polygon: BRAS ZYN PLAATS no.301 at 5.1 km, RIET KOLK no.385 at 5.1 km, WIT KLIP no.372 at 6.5 km, PIET LOUWS VLEY no.302 at 9.0 km and WITFONTEIN no.299 at 13.7 km. All five are 97 to 118 km from Oude Muur 619. Five neighbours cannot be wrong together. SO "RIET KOLK OF OUDE MUUR" ON THE DIAGRAM IS RIET KOLK No. 385, A SECOND FARM CALLED OUDE MUUR, five kilometres south of this one and 104 km from the family's Oude Muur. THAT IS THE FINDING, and it is a warning this project needs: the name Oude Muur is on at least three pieces of ground now - farm 619 in the Hantam where PER-001629 was born and died, the Prince Albert Marincowitz farm PAR-000029, and Riet Kolk 385 in the eastern Calvinia division. Anyone reading "Oude Muur" in a document from now on has to say WHICH.
