The album carries a narrative account of the skirmish of 2 February 1901, which eGGSA in turn attribute to a thread on saforums.co.za (topic 8254.5). SO IT IS A SECOND-HAND ACCOUNT AND SHOULD BE READ AS ONE - it is not a despatch, a court record or a regimental diary, and no primary source for it has been seen here. It is recorded because it is specific, because it names people and ground, and because its geography is independently checkable against this project's own coordinates - which it passes. IT ALSO CONTRADICTS ITSELF AGAINST THE STONE: the account says Klue and Boyd were both buried in Wolwekloof, yet the grave photographed is on Remhoogte 167. [TO VERIFY] *** [3 Sep 2026] THE ALBUM TEXT RE-READ IN FULL, on graveswcape.eggsa.org after graves.eggsa.org returned 404. Recorded here so it need not be fetched again. *** The album is titled for the 'Grave of Johannes Klue - member of the commando of Gideon Scheepers, who died on 2 Feb 1901.' The narrative: Scheepers's commando entered the Cape Colony on 16 DECEMBER 1900. On 2 February 1901 British Mounted Troops approached Klaarstroom and found Boer forces occupying the hamlet. A running battle followed near Remhoogte in DIE GANG, the valley between Klaarstroom and Prince Albert. 'Lance Corporal J. Boyd, a tough Irishman who had lived in Australia, was critically wounded. He hid in Wolwekloof where Johannes Klue, one of the Boers, stumbled across him. Johannes Klue was shot in the chest at point blank range.' Klue is given as TWENTY-TWO and FROM ABERDEEN, and buried on the farm Remhoogte. Three captions only: 'Graf voor dit herstel is', 'Graf na dit herstel is', 'KLEU Johannes 1880-1901'. *** TWO THINGS THIS PROJECT HAD ATTRIBUTED TO THE ALBUM ARE NOT IN IT. *** It does not name R DU PLESSIS and it does not say WHO RESTORED THE GRAVE. Both were carried in our notes as though the album said so; the du Plessis detail belongs to Rose Willis's cameo (SRC-010) and the restoration is an inference from the two captions. Corrected. *** AND ONE DETAIL REPAIRS THE FEBRUARY DATE AGAINST THE STANDING OBJECTION TO IT. *** That objection was that August fitted the campaign better, because Scheepers was taken near Prince Albert in October. The album gives the entry into the Colony as 16 December 1900, so a Scheepers action at Klaarstroom in early February 1901 is perfectly possible and that objection falls away.
