Die van der Merwes trek van die Boland na die Hantam

Carel Aaron van der Merwe's eldest son was born at Elsenbosch in the Vier-en-Twintig Riviere, Piketberg district, on 1 February 1794. Another son was born at Tygerhoek in the Hantam about May 1808. Both facts come from the men's own death notices, which state a birthplace and an age to the day. Between those two births the household moved about 400 km north-east, off the well-watered Boland edge and onto the Hantam veld. The church took another generation to follow: the 1794 son was christened at Tulbagh, his own son at Tulbagh again in 1814 nearly a year after birth, the next generation at Clanwilliam in 1833, and only from 1863 at Calvinia itself. Two men are named on this event and a third is not. Carel Aaron and his eldest son made the journey. Izaak Johannes (PER-001658) was born at the far end of it and is the evidence for when it closed, which is a different thing from having travelled.
