Die Koup-droogte, dele van die streek word woestyn

1946–1947 · regional · Prince Albert

After five years of poor rain, sheep began dying in numbers. 75,000 head lost in the Beaufort West district alone; Beaufort-Wes, Laingsburg and Merweville worst hit, the Kamdeboo partly spared. Die Volksblad's headline on 5 February 1947: DIE KOUP FEITLIK AL WOESTYN. An earlier drought had hit in 1926/27. The region is named for how fat its sheep get; this is the other face of that.
